The Safe Construction Site
British construction sites are the safest in Europe and Saunders Brothers play their own small part in achieving that. How do we do it?
The law requires all construction businesses, from the one-man band to the largest public limited company, to assess the dangers in their work and reduce them to the lowest “reasonably practicable” level. All but the very smallest firms must do so in writing.
From this, a safe method of work or method statement is written, detailing how the work is to be done and how the risks are to be minimised.
The Construction Phase Plan – also legally required - contains all this plus emergency procedures and other details on how the site will be kept safe.
Architects must by law ensure that their designs can be built safely, so if there’s a difficulty, consultation may be necessary, but a safe method of working will be arrived at.
This paperwork can’t prevent a single accident – but in the hands of a good Site Manager it certainly can.
